An elderly couple reached out — husband still mobile, wife now wheelchair-bound. Their bathroom had been fine for decades, but her situation had changed and the shower was no longer safe for her to use without something solid to hold onto. They wanted grab bars installed properly, and they wanted them to actually hold.
That last part matters more than most people realize.
The Problem with Most Grab Bar Installs
Grab bars get installed wrong all the time. Someone picks up a bar at the hardware store, finds what feels like a stud, drives a few screws, and calls it done. It looks fine. Until it isn't.
Tile walls don't anchor the way drywall does. You can't just drive a screw into grout and expect it to hold under body weight — especially if someone is using the bar to catch a fall or transfer from a wheelchair. That kind of load will pull a poorly mounted bar right out of the wall, and when it does, the person holding it comes with it.
The right install requires hitting a stud, using a toggle anchor rated for the load, or — in this case — going through tile carefully without cracking it and anchoring into the wall structure behind it.

What We Installed
For this job we installed two chrome grab bars in the shower area adjacent to the bathtub — one horizontal bar positioned high on the back wall for balance while standing or transferring, and one angled bar lower on the side wall to assist with lowering and rising.
The placement wasn't random. We talked through how she uses the space, where she needs support at each stage of getting in and near the tub, and positioned both bars where they'd actually be useful — not just where drilling was easiest.
On a tiled wall, the process is methodical. Tile bits, slow speed, no cracking. We located the structural support behind the tile, used the right anchoring hardware for the wall type, and torqued every fastener to spec. Both bars are solid — no flex, no wobble.
Why Placement Is Everything
A grab bar in the wrong spot is almost as bad as no bar at all. The goal is to support the specific movements someone makes in that specific space — not a generic "put one here" approach. For someone transferring from a wheelchair, the entry point to the shower matters. The height at which you catch yourself matters. The angle of the bar matters.
We take a few extra minutes to think through the use case before we drill anything. It costs nothing and makes the difference between a bar that actually helps and one that's in the way.
Grab bars can be installed in tile, drywall, and fiberglass surrounds — but the anchoring method is different for each. If you have tile, make sure whoever installs the bars knows how to drill it without cracking. And always verify that the bar is rated for the load it'll see — most quality bars are rated for 250–500 lbs. The cheap ones often aren't labeled at all.

This couple had been in their home for years and intended to stay. That's what aging in place looks like — not moving somewhere new, but adapting the home they already love so it keeps working for them.
